ASTM A194 is a specification for nuts made of carbon, alloy, martensitic stainless steel, and austenitic stainless steel. These nuts are designed to withstand high temperatures or pressures. The nuts come in a variety of sizes, from 1/4 in to 4 in and M6 to M100 nominal. Here are some things to know about ASTM A194 stainless steel nuts:

• GradesThe most popular grades are A194 2H and 2HM, which are high tensile internally threaded fasteners. Other common grades include 3, 4, 6, 7, 7H, 8, and 16. 
• ManufacturingStainless steels for grades 6 and 8 nuts are made using an electric furnace, vacuum induction furnace, or a combination of the two followed by remelting. Grades 1 and 2 nuts are hot or cold forged, or machined from bars. 
• FitNuts up to 1 in nominal size have a UNC Series Class 2B fit. Nuts over 1 in nominal size have either a UNC Series Class 2B fit or an 8 UN Series Class 2B fit.
