The ASTM A178/A178M standard specifies the requirements for electric-resistance-welded carbon steel and carbon-manganese steel tubes used in boilers, superheaters, boiler flues, and safe ends. The standard covers the following: 

• Steel gradesThe steel can be A (low-carbon), C (medium-carbon), or D (carbon-manganese). 
• CompositionThe steel must conform to specified compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and silicon. 
• Tensile requirementsGrades C and D must meet specified tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation requirements. 
• TestingTubes must undergo heat treatment, cooling, flattening, flange, tension, reverse flattening, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric tests. A crush test may also be required. 
• RetestingIf the original test fails, two additional lengths of tubes must be retested. Both retests must meet the requirements, or the remaining material in the lot must be rejected. 

The dimensions of ASTM A53 steel pipes are as follows:

• Size: The size of ASTM A53 pipes ranges from 1/8 in to 26 in NPS. 
• Wall thickness: The wall thickness of ASTM A53 pipes varies depending on the schedule, but can range from 3 mm to 12 mm. 
• Schedules: ASTM A53 pipes are available in schedules 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 80. 
• Types: ASTM A53 pipes can be seamless, welded, fabricated, or ERW. 
• Finishes: ASTM A53 pipes can be black, hot-dipped, zinc-coated, or welded. 
• Lengths: ASTM A53 pipes can be single random, which are 16 ft to 22 ft long, or double random, which have a minimum average length of 35 ft.
